Welcome to the
Book of Shadows
Here you will find a small collection of spells to help you
begin your own Book of Shadows. And as new spells are submitted, they too shall
be posted. Again this is the Abridged version of the DAPC Book of Shadows.
Brief History of the Book of Shadows:
The Book of Shadows or “BOS” is a book or tomb that you write all of your
personal thoughts, spells, rituals, recipes, chants, workings, ect. into. This
term came around during the Burning Times (see Craft History) because to have
such a book meant that you were in fact a witch, and that you would instantly be
put to death.
Well, the books were always hidden away within the shadows, where
no one would or could ever find them. Thus the term BOS came about. Also, many
witches and craft practitioners, believe that you should never share your BOS
for if you do, you allow another to have power over you, or that they can place
an imprint of their energy on your book.
It is a sign of respect that you always
ask before touching someone else’s stuff. And many witches/practitioners keep 2
Book of Shadows, one for their own personal use and one that they openly and
freely share with other’s. This is usually a Covenal Book of Shadows, into which
all the spells that the coven members wish to share with one another are placed.
Also, this Covenal BOS is usually a BOS that is given to a new student or member
of the coven, so that they are ‘on the same page’ as the rest of the coven.
Magical Names: It is common practice to assume a new name once you begin
learning the craft. This new ID is your ‘new form’ as a witch. It gives you a
unique name, one that with the proper use and dedication, can be very powerful.
A Magical name is also used for communicating with the Gods and Spirits.
Many people choose their magical names based on magical items such as the moon,
crystals, lakes, rivers, mountain’s, ravens, hawks, owls, oak, sage, and so on.
So you can have any combination of them to make up your name. It is common
practice to give yourself a first, middle, and last name just as your parents
did when you were born. So you could choose to be Crystal Moon Sage, or Raven
Moon Hawk, or Crystal Sage….
A Healing Ritual For Animals:
Call on the God/dess images who themselves have animal companions for their
aid.
“Guardian of the animal spirits we bring before you ________________ to
entrust to your care. Allow the natural recuperating powers of their body to be
rejuvenated. Bring light of warmth and comfort to them, along with waves of
healing.”

Prosperity Spell
The tools you will need are:
Protection Incense (herbs or oils work fine also), Green 8″ Taper
Candle, Pen, Paper, Heat-resistant bowl It is best to find a work area that you
can leave untouched for three days. If you must put away your tools, try to at
least keep your spell candle out in the open. This spell is used to create
tangible prosperity.
Read over this spell and customize it prior to use-the work will go
much smoother. Prepare your work area by setting up any tools you may use in
addition to your spell candle. While setting up your area, CONCENTRATE on the
purpose of your work.
Envision what it is that will make you prosperous. For this spells’ purpose,
we will use money as an example. Just prior to your work, bathe in purification
herbs, or with your favorite bath salts.
While you are bathing, concentrate again on the purpose of your spell. Do not
let negative thoughts enter your mind.
After bathing, go to your work area. Cast a circle and light some protection
incense. Envision a large, green ball of light surrounding you and your work
area. Hold the candle between the palms of your hands and direct all of your
energy into the candle.
On a small piece of paper, write down what it is that you want (money, etc.).
Place this piece of paper under the candle holder. Place the candle in its
candle holder. Prior to lighting the candle, say (either aloud, or to yourself):
“This candle represents the prosperity that will come
to me”
Light the candle and say (either aloud or to yourself):
“As the light of this flame grows, I can see
prosperity around me.”
Sit back and watch the candle burn. Envision what you will look like and feel
like when your prosperity comes. See yourself holding the money, feel the
texture of it. When the candle had burned 1/3 of the way, say:
“As the flame of the candle dissipates with
time-prosperity will be mine”
and blow out the candle. Repeat this for two more nights. On the last night,
burn the piece of paper with your written words on it and place the ashes into a
bowl. After the candle has burned away and the leftover wax has cooled-, combine
the ashes and wax together and bury it in the earth as close to your home as
possible. Prosperity will be yours!
To Rid Yourself of Negatives
BEST TIME – Waning Moon; Set an empty cauldron or goblet on your altar
between 2 lit white candles. Burn a good protection or blessings incense. Robe
yourself, preferably in white, and stand or sit before the altar. Breathe slowly
and evenly until you are calm and centered. Take the cauldron or goblet in both
hands; hold high over the altar in salute to the gods. Lower to chest level and
slowly breathe into the cauldron, silently naming each habit, person or
experience you wish removed from your life. When finished, turn the cauldron or
goblet upside down on the altar, saying:
“The Contents of this vessel, I give to thee, Great
Ones.
Exchange these experiences for better.”
Place an offering of herbs and milk outside. Or at least burn
the herbs in your censer.
And harken ye unto our word.
And come ye as the charm is made.
And work our will by Magick rite.
Chant the spell and it Be done.
Eko, eko Aradia.
